Fix black textures in Unturned on Ubuntu Linux 2017

TL;DR: apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc

One of my kids is playing Unturned on Ubuntu Linux 17.04 and he has complained about some textures being black. For example the grass on some maps. I couldn’t find a solution and gave up.

Last week we installed DOTA2 on his machine but it displayed this error message and failed to start:

Required OpenGL extension “GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc” is not supported. Please update your OpenGL driver.

The solution was found in a response on askubuntu.com – to install the libtxc-dxtn-s2tc package that implements S2TC – Super Simple Texture Compression. The great side-effect of this was that the next time my child started Unturned, the grass was green and not black! So Unturned also need this OpenGL extension to support all textures on his setup!
